Beginning May 3, 2023, the REAL ID Act will go in effect. Having a REAL ID isn’t mandatory but it will be more convenient to board commercial flights, visit military bases, nuclear sites, federal prisons, federal courthouses or other federal facilities.
The REAL ID Act requires all states to adhere to minimum security standards in order to make all IDs more consistent and secure. Starting May 3, 2023, every air traveler 18 years of age and older will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, state-issued enhanced driver’s license, or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the United States. Please check with your state driver’s license agency for details on how to obtain your REAL ID.
- If you are traveling domestically, you will only need one valid form of identification – either your REAL ID or another acceptable form of ID, such as a passport.
- If you are traveling internationally, you will still need your passport, as REAL ID cards are not an acceptable form of identification for international travel.
- Sea (cruise) travel: REAL ID cards cannot be used for international sea cruise travel.

How do I get a REAL ID?
Visit your state’s driver’s licensing agency website to find out exactly what documentation is required to obtain a REAL ID. At a minimum, you must provide documentation showing: 1) Full Legal Name; 2) Date of Birth; 3) Social Security Number; 4) Two Proofs of Address of Principal Residence; and 5) Lawful Status.
States may impose additional requirements, so check with your state’s driver’s licensing agency website, before visiting them in person, for additional guidance and assistance.
How do I know if my license or identification is REAL ID compliant?
REAL ID-compliant cards will have of one of the markings, shown below, on the upper top portion of the card. If the card does not have one of these markings, it is not REAL ID-compliant and won’t be accepted as proof of identity in order to board commercial aircraft.
